Today I decided to do an Adobe Capitivate project of the improved   Site Importer  from Web Assist. If you haven't used this handy dandy little tool you are in for a nice surprise.

So here are a few scenarios to consider where this tool could come in real handy.

  1. You just been handed a project were the client doesn't have the FTP access to the current site.

  2. The developer who originally developed the site isn't around any more.

  3. You just want to verify your site and make sure there are no broken links.

  4. You want to create a CD Rom of the site for your client.

Taken from Web Assist website: "Get more of any site and explore it more completely than ever before with Site Import v3. Site Import retrieves any Web site – static or dynamic – and recreates the site with all the images, SWFs, CSS and HTML intact. With Site Import v3, you can pull in multiple domains, recreate Dreamweaver templates and print full site reports. Site Import brings in the whole site in one operation and maintains the site structure as well—now with full reporting capabilities!"

I was really impressed with how quickly it was able to import an entire site and how it kept everything in tact including my template. The only thing it will not do is keep your server side includes as these are rendered on the server as part of your file. However, since it is able to recreate your template it is pretty easy to redo the template with your includes.

One thing to add.  I am still learning the captivate software and how to do these demonstrations so please excuse my stumbling a bit.  I will get better as I do more of these.
